Capital Coding Summer Program Starting Next Week

February 09, 20232 min read

Hi HES Parents,

I’m Sam Meddin. I’m a student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) high school and the founder of Capital Coding Academy, a group of local high school students who teach small group coding lessons for elementary and middle school students. I have always been interested in STEM, with a passion for computers. I began learning to code while attending Somerset Elementary School and now enjoy creating video games even more than playing them. I’m also the president of the B-CC Robotics Team, as well as an active member of B-CC’s astronomy club, debate team, and model UN team. As for my experience working with younger kids, I’ve been a minis coach for my local swim team, a tutor for the Somerset Elementary School math club, and am a member of the KID Museum Apprenticeship Program.

We will be holding a summer session in which will be offering online small group lessons of 4 to 8 students delivered using Zoom to teach students one of the most practical and sought-after skills, coding! Registration is now open, and our first week of classes will be next week, the week of June 21st. Sessions will last 1 week where we meet once a day during the weekdays for 3-hours each either in the morning or afternoon. The cost for each session is $225.

For now, we will be offering two curricula. The first curriculum is geared toward elementary school students and will utilize Scratch; a software development platform that uses a graphical interface rather than text. The other curriculum, geared towards middle school students, will utilize Python; a computer language used extensively in academics and business. Each lesson will build upon the knowledge learned from past lessons.

To view classes, schedules, and register, please go to our website: www.capitalcodingacademy.com. When registering, we ask that you sign up for one of the “Novice I” classes, as this is the first progression level meant for those starting out with Capital Coding Academy, even if they have some prior experience. Our only requirements for new students are a computer (Mac, PC, or Chromebook), internet, and a desire to learn to code! Please feel free to contact me directly at samuelmeddin@gmail.com if you have any questions.
